General Gutiérrez Martínez, recently appointed commander of the 42nd Military Zone, along with three other soldiers, were injured on Saturday, February 1st, when they were attacked with explosives launched from a drone. The incident took place in the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the 'golden triangle' area, between the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua.
Immediately after the attack, help was requested via radio and a military helicopter arrived to transport the injured to the Ninth Military Zone in Culiacán and later to a hospital. The injured were identified as General Gutiérrez Martínez, 56 years old, Aída Roxana 'N', 39 years old, belonging to the State Public Security Secretariat, Eliseo Carlos 'N', and Humberto 'N'.
The location of the attack was a town called Dolores, between Guadalupe y Calvo and La Lechuguilla, in Chihuahua. Although unofficial reports indicated that the commander only suffered shrapnel injuries, an official report on his health status is awaited.
A broad military operation has been deployed on land and in the air in the area as a security measure. So far, the attack has not been attributed to any specific cartel or faction, despite an ongoing 'war' among some groups following the arrest of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada five months ago.
General Gutiérrez Martínez and the other injured soldiers were urgently transferred to a hospital in Culiacán, Sinaloa, where they are being treated in the early hours of Sunday, February 2nd.
