The deadline for citizen organizations interested in creating new political parties to notify their intention to the National Electoral Institute expired last Friday. This period ran from January 8 to 31. A total of 89 notifications were received from these organizations.
The crisis faced by political parties in Mexico is due to their evident inability to represent the interests of their bases. This is reflected in electoral results and the migration of disappointed members to the ruling Morena party. Parties have stopped fulfilling their constitutional obligations and have become the property of their leaderships, controlling resources and perpetuating themselves in power.
It is expected that only two or three of the new organizations interested in becoming political parties will manage to establish themselves, facing unequal competition against the ruling alliance. It is essential for Mexican democracy to have an effective opposition and not merely a testimonial one, capable of genuinely representing society.
The process of establishing new parties has intersected with the controversial judicial election and the threat of electoral reforms by the ruling party. The INE and TEPJF will have the responsibility of conducting this procedure. The recomposition of the opposition is crucial to restore democracy in Mexico and counteract the excessive concentration of power after the 2024 elections.
Organizations interested in becoming political parties must meet a series of requirements, including holding state and district assemblies with a certain number of members, achieving a minimum membership registration through a software application, and formally requesting registration with proof of requirements in January 2026.
The competent authority will determine the eligibility or ineligibility of the registrations by July of next year. Beyond formal aspects, it is essential that the new parties correct the dynamics and vices of the current political institutions to offer new and authentic options to Mexican society.
