Sheinbaum Calls for Closure of USAID Amid Controversy

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her opinion on Tuesday regarding the possible closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) prompted by Elon Musk, highlighting the funding provided to "opposition" organizations against the Mexican Government. In her morning conference, Sheinbaum indicated that it would be preferable for USAID to close and for alternative transparent aid channels to be opened.

Regarding Elon Musk's statements about dismantling the agency, Sheinbaum commented that it is necessary to guarantee transparency in the distribution of external aid, emphasizing the importance of avoiding funding for organizations opposed to the Government. The Mexican leader mentioned Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI) as an example, an organization that has received support from USAID and has been labeled as "coup-supporting".

Sheinbaum expressed her concern about the interference of aid agencies in political matters and stressed the need for the United States to channel its aid transparently, especially to address the underlying causes of migration. In this sense, the president considered it crucial that any U.S. aid or investment be provided directly and transparently.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was appointed as the interim director of USAID, as speculation arises about a possible closure of the agency by President Trump. These decisions and potential changes generate debate around the distribution of international aid and its impact on the political agenda of recipient countries.
