Controversy Over US Military Aircraft in Mexican Airspace

On February 4th, controversy arose due to the presence of a specialized American surveillance aircraft flying over the Sea of Cortés, between Baja California Sur and Sinaloa, in the Sea of Cortés, Mexico. Suspicions of a possible assault on Mexican sovereignty emerged, but the news outlet Infodemia refuted these rumors by confirming that the flight took place outside of Mexican airspace.

The National Defense Secretary (Sedena) confirmed the presence of the American aircraft in international waters far from Mexican territory. President Claudia Sheinbaum also provided explanations, emphasizing that the plane was flying in international airspace, noting that this was not unusual.

This aircraft, identified as a Boeing RC-135V Rivet Joint, belonging to the United States Air Force, is used for military espionage and data collection purposes. Through its Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) capability, it can capture and analyze radio and radar signals to obtain strategic information.

The incident provoked reactions on social media, where the presence of the aircraft spread, raising concerns given the current political tension between Mexico and the United States. However, Mexican authorities clarified that it was a routine flight in international waters, dismissing any territorial violation.
