The founder and director of Capisci, Andrea de Anda, spoke with 'Aristegui en Vivo' about the current perception of Mexicans regarding the arrival of Donald Trump to power in the United States. De Anda explained that the threats from the U.S. president are not directed at a specific group but at Mexico as a whole, which has generated a sense of patriotism on social media and in public conversation.
Although Trump's threats have been vehemently rejected, the government’s defensive stance on behalf of Mexican citizens has received support. De Anda highlighted that beyond discussions about collaboration between countries, the attitude of protecting national sovereignty has generated a 64% positive conversation rate. Mexicans online are calling for the defense of their country, the halt of tariffs, and the preservation of state autonomy.
However, the possibility of military intervention has been widely rejected, with nearly 80% negative sentiment on social media. Users interpret this intervention as a threat to national sovereignty and a weakening of the autonomy of the Mexican government. Although the majority of the Mexican population rejects deportations from the United States on digital platforms, 25% are in favor, generating 3.7 million interactions and 55% negative sentiment in this discussion.
According to De Anda, positive opinions towards deportations stem from frustration over the migratory crisis at the Mexico border. About 37% believe that migration should be legal, while another 34% think Mexico should welcome migrants but under conditions of security and employment. The expert emphasized the importance of understanding the dynamics of discourse on social media, especially regarding the use of bots and strategies for manipulating public opinion.
