On the morning of this Tuesday, a riot in a prison in the state of Tabasco, in southern Mexico, resulted in the death of at least seven people, according to the Attorney General's Office of the state (FGE), which has already started the relevant investigations.
The FGE of Tabasco communicated the start of the investigation into the events that occurred at the Tabasco Social Reintegration Center (CRESET) in Villahermosa, where seven deaths occurred. Local authorities also indicated that they are working in coordination with the Tabasco Security Table.
According to local media, around 11:00 local time, a shooting broke out inside the prison during a confrontation between inmates. In response to this situation, agents from the National Guard and state security were dispatched to the site to address the situation.
Videos have begun circulating on social media where gunshots can be heard, as well as images showing alleged relatives of the inmates waiting outside the prison to find out what happened and who was affected.
This riot represents the second violent incident that has occurred in this prison in the last three months. On December 19 of last year, another altercation left two inmates dead and several wounded. On that occasion, firearms and ammunition were seized, including an AR-15 rifle, five handguns, a fragmentation grenade, and various ammunition magazines.
Tabasco has experienced a significant increase in intentional homicides during the year 2024, with 821 victims recorded between January and November, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). This figure represents a 263.27% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.
