Cuauhtémoc Blanco Faces Possible Immunity Removal

The General Prosecutor of Morelos has initiated a request for the removal of immunity against Cuauhtémoc Blanco, facing allegations of attempted assault. The procedure will be analyzed by the Chamber of Deputies, with possible legal actions pending.

Cuauhtémoc Blanco Faces Possible Immunity Removal

The Attorney General of the State of Morelos has filed a petition for immunity removal against Cuauhtémoc Blanco Bravo, current federal deputy and former governor, for the alleged crime of attempted rape. Prosecutor Uriel Carmona Gándara confirmed the legal action following the complaint filed by the victim, identified as the half-sister of the former governor.

The process originated from an incident that reportedly occurred in December 2023 at the official residence of the then governor, and includes evidentiary elements presented by the victim, her lawyers, and the Attorney General's office. The prosecutor emphasized that they seek to proceed justly and avoid political persecution, respecting due process.

If the immunity removal is approved by a qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies, the Attorney General could proceed before a criminal judge in a matter of weeks. If the immunity removal does not succeed, the criminal process would be paused until Blanco Bravo completes his term as a federal deputy, which could possibly involve preventive detention.

Carmona Gándara expressed that the Attorney General's office has received multiple complaints against Cuauhtémoc Blanco, but that each case is analyzed based on the available evidence. It is expected that the case will not generate political repercussions, and there are concerns about possible reprisals against the institution and its personnel.

Regarding the penalties contemplated in the legislation, the prosecutor avoided giving specific details to prevent generating a strong media impact. The immunity removal request will be analyzed in the Union Congress in the coming days, and if approved, the Attorney General of Morelos will proceed with the judicialization of the case before state authorities.
