New Anti-Nepotism Reform in Mexico Stops Immediate Gubernatorial Candidacies

The president of the Senate's board of directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, explained that Félix Salgado Macedonio and Saúl Monreal could not compete for the governorships of Guerrero and Zacatecas immediately in the 2027 midterm elections. This is due to a reform presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum that prohibits nepotism, preventing relatives of public officials from running for popular positions immediately after these officials leave office.

Noroña indicated at a conference that Salgado and Monreal could compete, but they would have to wait at least six years after their relatives leave their corresponding positions. Currently, Evelyn Salgado, daughter of Félix Salgado, is the governor of Guerrero, while his brother Saúl Monreal, who is a senator, has expressed his intention to run for the same governorship later.

It is expected that in the 2027 midterm elections, governors of 16 states will be renewed, including Guerrero and Zacatecas, as well as Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chihuahua, Colima, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, and Tlaxcala.

The reform presented by Claudia Sheinbaum includes measures against nepotism, which prevents relatives of public officials from holding positions immediately after these officials leave. Fernández Noroña hinted that these initiatives have not yet arrived in Congress, but a working group will be formed to analyze them, considering them important topics for both Morena and the PT and PVEM coalition.

"Effective suffrage, no reelection," emphasized the president during the presentation of these initiatives. The prohibition of nepotism states that there is no restriction to participate, but a certain period must be fulfilled. For his part, David Monreal is the current governor of Zacatecas.
