Sheinbaum Criticizes Trump's Tariffs | Ours Abroad News

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed that she sent a letter to Donald Trump, president of the United States, to argue against the recent increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum, considering this measure unjustified due to erroneous premises. During a press conference, Sheinbaum explained that in the letter she attached a graph that evidences the surplus the United States has with Mexico in the trade of steel and aluminum.

In response to the idea raised by Trump about trade deficits, the president emphasized that in the case of steel and aluminum, it is the opposite. According to data provided by the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico records a surplus of $6.897 billion in this sector. Despite the recent 25% increase in tariffs imposed globally by Trump, Sheinbaum is confident that the new rates will not be applied.

Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of collaboration and cooperation between countries, firmly maintaining Mexico's position in defense of its sovereignty. Official data sent by Sheinbaum to Trump refute the previous assertions of the American president, which suggested a deficit in the trade relationship between the two countries in the steel and aluminum sector. This data discredits Trump's initial arguments about the need to increase tariffs in this sector.
