Release of Nayarit's Ex-Prosecutor After Sentence Reduction

The former prosecutor of Nayarit, Edgar Veytia, who was sentenced for drug trafficking in the United States, was released from the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Monday, February 10. His release followed a reduction in his sentence resulting from his cooperation as a witness in significant drug trafficking cases.

Veytia was arrested in March 2017 at the Tijuana-San Diego international bridge and charged with conspiracy, distribution, and manufacturing of drugs such as heroin, cocaine, methamphetamines, and marijuana. He was sentenced in September 2019 to 20 years in prison, but in April 2024, his sentence was reduced to 10 years with five years of supervised release for his cooperation in investigations.

Despite his release, the possibility that Veytia may remain in custody of another entity or under supervised release has not been ruled out by the BOP. As of December 2024, his release was scheduled for October 2025. The extradition order against Veytia remains in effect in Mexico, where he faces nine arrest warrants for crimes such as aggravated kidnapping, extortion, abuse of authority, trafficking in influences, and torture.

The Attorney General of Nayarit, Petronilo Díaz Ponce Medrano, confirmed that the extradition order has been updated before the Attorney General's Office.
