President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered to reinforce security at the oil platforms of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in the Campeche Sound, following recent attacks by pirates on several of its facilities. The most recent incident occurred on the night of February 14, 2025, at the Zaap Delta platform, part of the Ku Maloob Zaap Complex, which is one of the country's main oil fields.
Section 47 of the Petroleum Workers Union of the Mexican Republic (STPRM) reported through its social media that the pirates subdued the workers, robbing them of their belongings and stealing critical equipment for operations, such as pumps and breathing systems. In light of this serious situation, the president instructed the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of workers and the protection of strategic facilities.
In a conference on Monday, February 17, at the National Palace, the president stated: 'The Secretary of the Navy is supporting Pemex in monitoring the platforms and responding to any attack.' Security for the oil platforms has been recognized as a priority by the government, given the importance of the industry to the national economy.
In response, Semar will deploy surveillance units and patrols, both maritime and aerial, in the highest-risk areas to monitor activity in the Campeche Sound and act quickly in response to any threat. Additionally, stricter security protocols will be implemented, and Pemex personnel will be trained in self-protection measures and emergency procedures.
The measure aims to ensure that incidents like the recent one at Pemex oil platforms in the Campeche Sound do not repeat and that operations in the region remain safe and effective.
