President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced on Monday, February 17, the possibility of imposing fines for cargo transport on federal highways. This statement came after the crash on the Mexico-Puebla highway on Sunday, where unfortunately six people died. Sheinbaum informed that she and her team are evaluating transport regulations to implement new rules aimed at preventing such road tragedies.
During her morning press conference, the president mentioned: "We are reviewing the regulations regarding federal public transport and how to supervise these vehicles to avoid the number of accidents on the highways." In this regard, she proposed the idea of applying speed cameras as a speed control measure on the highways, focusing especially on cargo transport.
Sheinbaum stated that they are considering the possibility of establishing speed cameras near toll booths or another type of mechanism to control speeds on the highways, highlighting that the fines would be exclusively for cargo vehicles. Additionally, she assured that before implementing any measure, the proposal will be discussed with the involved transporters.
Regarding speed cameras or photo tickets, in Mexico City, these are photographs that capture vehicles violating traffic rules through technological systems. These sanctions are designed to enforce a scheme of civic penalties determined by violations of the Traffic Regulations. The Mobility Secretariat (Semovi) specifies that these violations are imposed for behaviors such as speeding, infringing on pedestrian crossings, improper transportation of minors, disobeying traffic signs, among others.
