The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, reported that Sergio Torres, one of the deputies from the Citizen Movement (MC) shot in the state on Wednesday, is in a 'serious' condition and has been operated on. Later, Sinaloan authorities announced that after the operation, which lasted several hours, Torres was transferred to the intensive care unit, although they noted that while he was stabilized, the next 48 hours will be crucial. On the other hand, Rocha Moya confirmed to the media that Elizabeth Montoya, the other legislator attacked, is 'fine' and 'out of danger', although he detailed that 'she needs a series of operations'. The governor indicated that the driver who was driving during the attack by armed men 'has no major health problems'. He assured that they are working to clarify the attack, and emphasized that he has already communicated with President Claudia Sheinbaum; and with the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch; as well as with the president of MC, Dante Delgado, and his coordinator, Jorge Álvarez Máynez. Likewise, he informed that the State Prosecutor's Office and the Secretariat of Security of Sinaloa are on the case, bodies with which - he said - he has been in communication. 'We are looking for the aggressors,' he assured after explaining that allegedly one of the deputies' bodyguards repelled the attack and injured one of those responsible. Following the attack, in an informative note, the Security Cabinet of the Government of Mexico communicated that it has joined the investigation into the armed attack against the deputies, and that it maintains permanent coordination with state authorities to assist in the investigations and contribute to the arrest of those responsible. It specified that, in addition to the legislators, the injured person is a bodyguard who repelled the aggression and is reported to be stable. It added that federal institutions are collaborating with information exchange and video surveillance analysis to identify the escape route, and that during patrols they located an abandoned white vehicle, presumably related to the events. 'The crisis of impunity and violence in Mexico, and particularly in Sinaloa, has exceeded all limits. We will be attentive to the information of the case and to there being no impunity,' expressed Máynez on X. Sinaloa is experiencing a deep crisis of violence since the end of 2024 due to an internal struggle between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, which the United States declared a terrorist group last year. The dispute between 'Los Chapitos' and 'Los Mayos' has caused, since September 2024, more than 1,800 deaths and over 2,400 forced disappearances, according to figures from the NGO State Council for Public Safety (CESP).
