Alito Moreno in Washington: Political Moves and T-MEC Risks

The president of the Juridical Commission of San Lázaro, Morena deputy Hugo Eric Flores, expressed that in his legal opinion, the case of Alito Moreno should not be considered concluded. Leaders of Morena have emphasized that any communication with foreign governments must be conducted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, and that diplomatic channels on security are coordinated by the Security Cabinet of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

On the other hand, in the PRI, they emphasize the direct cooperation that leaders of the Mexican opposition such as Alito Moreno have maintained for years with the OAS under the direction of Luis Almagro. Private meetings to address relevant issues of the Mexico-United States relationship, such as security, the USMCA, and bilateral cooperation, are mentioned.

Recently, Alito Moreno made an unplanned visit to Washington D.C., where he alerted about the risk that, according to him, the Judiciary Reform of the 4T represents for the continuity of the USMCA. After holding private meetings whose details were not specified, the idea was spread that the purpose of the trip was to meet with Terry Cole, appointed by Donald Trump as head of the DEA.

Alito has mentioned his good relationship with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which could strengthen after the disappearance of USAID funds in Mexico. He has promoted the creation of a drug czar in Mexico, a position that, according to his inner circle, he aspires to occupy to centralize decision-making in the fight against synthetic drug trafficking, especially fentanyl.

In contrast, within the CEN of Morena, they believe that these actions by Alito Moreno are a distraction in light of a possible pending political trial in the Chamber of Deputies for alleged acts of corruption during his tenure as governor of Campeche. The CEN of Morena points out that certain matters have been prematurely declared as concluded without approval from the Juridical Commission of the previous legislature.
