The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, defended the collaboration between her country and the United States on the issue of drones flying over Mexican territory to spy on drug cartels. Sheinbaum stated that these flights are conducted at the request of the Mexican Government, with the aim of collaborating on security issues.
According to Sheinbaum, this cooperation occurs within the framework of agreements established between the Mexican Armed Forces and various institutions of the U.S. government. The president asserted that there is nothing illegal about these flights and that they are part of a collaboration and coordination protocol to address security conditions in the region.
The controversy arose when international media such as CNN and The New York Times reported on these CIA drone flights and their possible use to locate fentanyl labs in Mexico. Despite this, Sheinbaum emphasized that this cooperation has been ongoing for many years and is conducted in respect of Mexican sovereignty.
The Mexican leader denounced that the controversy generated around these flights aims to weaken her government and that they have always acted transparently, sharing information within the framework of fundamental principles of cooperation between Mexico and the United States. She asserted that they will continue to uphold their position based on principles, where sovereignty is non-negotiable and is a fundamental value for her administration.
