INE Rejects Nicknames on Ballots

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has decided to prohibit the inclusion of nicknames on the ballots for the election of judges. According to the agreement, proposed nicknames are considered electoral propaganda, violating the fundamental principles of equity and impartiality in elections.

In the particular case of Lenia Batres, whose nickname is the 'Minister of the People', it is argued that this nickname could unduly influence voters' perceptions, giving her an advantage over other candidates. This measure will also affect other candidates, such as Marco Antonio Rojo, Laura Arlenn, and Ángel Mario García, who had requested to appear on the ballots with nicknames like 'The Judge of AMLO', 'The Judge of Truth', and 'The Angel of Justice', respectively.

Guadalupe Taddei, president of the INE, has requested the discussion of a draft agreement to prohibit the inclusion of nicknames on electoral ballots, with the aim of ensuring equity and impartiality in the electoral process. The INE has also clarified that there will be no space on the ballots for including both nicknames and the official names of candidates, which could hinder the clarity of the information presented to voters and complicate the voting process.

In response to the 24 requests received to include nicknames on the ballots, the INE has confirmed that all will be rejected, including the request from Lenia Batres Guadarrama to appear as 'Minister of the People' in the election on July 1 to elect judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Judiciary. This measure also covers other nicknames submitted by different candidates for the Federal Judiciary, such as 'Judge of AMLO', 'The Judge of the 4T', and 'The Angel of Justice'.
