A Mexican congressman has expressed his concern about the recent reforms to the Amparo Law, stating that these changes could have negative consequences for citizens. According to his statements, the reform favors those with purchasing power while limiting benefits for the rest of the population.
The congressman criticized that these modifications could deter foreign investment and send a negative message to international rating agencies. He stated that the reforms undermine constitutional supremacy by placing the interests of power above those of the citizenry.
The reform, which was approved by a majority vote in the Chamber of Deputies, determines that the amparo trial does not proceed against certain judicial determinations and prohibits its application in cases of constitutional reforms. Additionally, it limits the general effects of amparo judgments.
The congressman highlighted that these reforms weaken fundamental rights by restricting access to justice and undermining judicial independence. He lamented that access to justice is being limited universally and that the rule of law is being put at risk.
Other political voices have also expressed concern about these reforms. A congresswoman from PAN criticized the elimination of the amparo trial, which she considers a failure to fulfill the constitutional duty to guarantee the protection of human rights. Meanwhile, a congressman from PRI described the reform as a setback to the rule of law and a violation of rights.
