The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that she will support former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo within the framework of Mexican laws. Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity with Castillo, recognizing the injustice he faces and the difficulty his lawyer has in visiting him.
At a press conference, Sheinbaum revealed that Castillo's lawyer, Guido Croxatto, requested the support of the Embassy to denounce internationally the violation of his client's rights. Castillo faces multiple legal proceedings, including the start of the oral trial for the attempted coup scheduled for March 4 in Peru.
Castillo's wife and children have received political asylum in Mexico, while the former president is in a complicated legal situation in his home country. Previously, former President López Obrador also expressed his support for Castillo in a meeting with his lawyer in 2023.
Mexico and Peru have maintained relations at the level of charge d'affaires since February 2023, after López Obrador considered the government of Dina Boluarte in Peru to be 'spurious.' Despite diplomatic tensions, Sheinbaum committed to supporting Castillo and his legal efforts to seek justice.
