The owner of Banco Azteca and Grupo Salinas, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, has filed a civil lawsuit against eight journalists, economists, and social media users linked to the Fourth Transformation (4T). The financial institution argues that this group spread false information about a possible bankruptcy of the bank, causing significant damage to its assets and reputation.
Salinas Pliego responded to the controversy indicating that the accused had spread lies and false accusations about him and his bank. He referred to their choice of "chayote," suggesting they received payment for spreading false information. The businessman warned those involved that they could face legal consequences for their actions.
Among the accused are journalists such as Jorge Gómez Naredo, Vicente Serrano, and Sandra Aguilera, as well as economist Víctor Arámburu, YouTuber Ignacio Rodríguez, and social media user Miguel Ángel Pelayo. They are all charged with promoting the idea of Banco Azteca's bankruptcy using online platforms and the hashtag #BancoAztecaEnQuiebra.
The lawsuit filed by Banco Azteca claims that the actions of the accused generated a crisis of confidence among customers, resulting in the departure of 885 thousand users, a loss of over 80% in the balance of 801 thousand accounts, and a 7% decrease in the bank's total deposits. In addition to financial compensation, the institution demands that any content related to the bankruptcy be removed, a summary of the case's ruling be published, and that similar information dissemination be prevented in the future.
