A week ago marked the release of 'El Gordo de Zempoala', leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel in Guanajuato, a state that leads the number of intentional homicides in Mexico. The Guanajuato Prosecutor's Office announced the capture of 'El Gordo de Zempoala' on February 10, highlighting that his detention was a significant blow against the criminal organization.
"The law imposes itself. Impunity has no place. From that area, the capo operated and controlled fuel theft and contract killings. To strengthen his criminal cell, 'El Gordo de Zempoala' began recruiting foreign hitmen, primarily from Colombia and Central America, who then returned to their countries. These gunmen were responsible for eliminating members of rival groups like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel," the Prosecutor's Office mentioned.
After the capture of 'El Marro' in 2020, 'El Gordo de Zempoala' emerged as a key operator in the reorganization of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. He consolidated his leadership in municipalities like Celaya and Apaseo due to his closeness to 'El Marro'. However, on February 15, a federal judge determined that the evidence presented was insufficient and ordered the release of 'El Gordo de Zempoala'.
Among the crimes he is accused of, his alleged participation in the attack that resulted in the deaths of four police officers in Uriangato in December stands out. He is also linked to other violent crimes. Despite his release, the Guanajuato Prosecutor's Office stated that they will continue the fight for justice and security in the region.
