Pati Chapoy Faces Possible Prison Time

Speculations about journalist Pati Chapoy facing prison for allegedly hiding Inés Gómez Mont, a fugitive, arise after receiving a text from her. Experts clarify the legal implications of such actions in Mexico.

Pati Chapoy Faces Possible Prison Time

On social media, dozens of users are questioning whether journalist Pati Chapoy could face criminal charges and be imprisoned for a possible cover-up of Inés Gómez Mont, who has been on the run from justice for four years. This controversy arose after Pati Chapoy received a text message from the television presenter, expressing her condolences for the death of Daniel Bisogno, host of Ventaneando.

During a live broadcast, Pati Chapoy mentioned that Inés Gómez Mont had contacted her through a text message, which generated speculation among social media users that Chapoy could collaborate with authorities to locate Gómez Mont or, alternatively, could be covering her up. This ambiguity has raised doubts about whether the journalist could be charged and would face legal consequences.

The crime of concealing, according to Dexia Abogados, is defined as actions or omissions to hinder or prevent the Administration of Justice from investigating a crime or identifying its perpetrators. In the case of Inés Gómez Mont, if it is determined that Chapoy is concealing her whereabouts, this illegality would be committed. The Federal Penal Code states that concealing a criminal can result in a prison sentence of three months to three years, in addition to a fine of fifteen to sixty days, if done with pecuniary intent.

Despite the possible legal implications, so far, Mexican authorities have not provided details regarding the communication between Inés Gómez Mont and Pati Chapoy following the aforementioned text message. The uncertainty surrounding this matter continues to be a source of speculation on social media and among the general public.
