A national survey shows that 69% of Mexicans have a favorable opinion of Pope Francis, highlighting 77% in the Bajío and 73% among the supporters of Morena.

A national survey conducted in January 2025 by El Financiero revealed that 69 percent of Mexicans have a good or very good opinion of Pope Francis. The segments with basic and secondary education expressed a favorable opinion in greater proportion, with 70 and 72 percent respectively, compared to university-educated individuals, who showed 62 percent favorable opinions.

The survey indicates that the positive opinion of the pope reached 75 percent among middle-class individuals and 65 percent among the lower class. By regions of the country, the central-west region, also known as Bajío, showed the highest positive opinion at 77 percent, while in the north, center, and south, the favorable opinion of the pontiff ranged between 64 and 68 percent.

Morenistas lead with a 73 percent positive opinion of Pope Francis, followed by opposition members with 70 percent. According to the survey, the Supreme Pontiff has maintained one of the highest levels of popularity in Mexico in the last two years, with a majority favorable opinion since November 2022.

The segment most favorable to the pope are Mexicans aged 18 to 29, with 77 percent positive opinion, 15 points higher than among people aged 30 to 49, who recorded 62 percent favorable opinion. In terms of gender, the positive opinion of Pope Francis is slightly higher among women at 71 percent, compared to men who have a 68 percent favorable opinion. Among independents, Pope Francis recorded a popularity level of 60 percent.

The survey was conducted via telephone with 400 adult Mexicans from January 23 to 27, 2025, using a probabilistic sampling of residential and mobile phones across the 32 federal entities. With a confidence level of 95 percent, the margin of error for the estimates was +/-4.9 percent.
