President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her concern on Monday for those who are against Pope Francis due to his vision considered "very progressive" and his criticisms of neoliberalism. In a morning conference, the president pointed out that it is alarming that individuals who call themselves Christians wish harm upon someone, even if they are their adversary. "Of course, all those who defend a different vision of the Church are against him," she stated.
Sheinbaum expressed her desire for the Pope’s speedy recovery considering that he represents much for humanity, beyond his role in the Catholic religion. News about the Pope's delicate health condition has generated international concern, although Vatican sources reported that the Supreme Pontiff had a good night, continues with his treatment, and is in good spirits.
Highlighting the relevance of Pope Francis in Mexico, the country with the second-largest Catholic population in the world after Brazil, Sheinbaum mentioned that she now sees him as a "humanist." She recalled her meeting with him in February 2024, before her campaign for the presidential elections on June 2, where they discussed women's leadership in politics and religion, among other topics.
The president cited two encyclicals by Pope Francis that reflect his progressive thinking: one dedicated to the protection of nature and the defense of planet Earth, and another on the consequences of neoliberalism. In the latter, the Pope addresses the issue of consumerism and how it has led to the loss of human essence in today's society.
