Political Implications of Mayo Zambada's Letter

Political analyst Edgardo Buscaglia commented on the letter delivered by Ismael 'Mayo' Zambada to the Consulate General of Mexico in New York, in which he requests the annulment of his trial in the United States and his repatriation. According to Buscaglia, the Mexican government, under the direction of Alejandro Gertz Manero, is considering returning the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, which he sees as a sign of impunity.

The analyst pointed out that the Sinaloa Cartel and other Mexican criminal organizations have deep ties to the political class of the country. He emphasized that this situation aligns with the perception that the Mexican government is at the service of organized crime.

Buscaglia criticized the possibility that Mexico could achieve Zambada's repatriation, considering the Attorney General's Office as a "branch of organized crime." He warns that this move would only guarantee impunity and compares it to the case of Salvador Cienfuegos, who was arrested in the U.S. but released in Mexico.

The analyst predicts that the Zambada case will be used as a pressure tool by Claudia Sheinbaum's government to meet Donald Trump's objectives regarding immigration and Chinese investments. He highlights that the handover of the drug trafficker could be part of negotiations with the U.S., which he considers a sign of institutional corruption.

Regarding Zambada's figure and his possible repatriation, Buscaglia mentioned that the death penalty violates international human rights conventions, and in such cases, negotiations often take place to guarantee life imprisonment. He considers that returning Mayo Zambada would be a fall into impunity and a corrupt negotiation with Trump.
