Unauthorized US Flights in Mexico Generated Controversy

During her morning conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned about whether the Mexican government will request information from the United States regarding flights that have operated over national territory in the past week. In response, Sheinbaum mentioned that this information is considered private and is part of the National Security System. She assured that they always work in respect to established protocols.

According to Article 21 of the law, there was a report of the detection of a 'track of interest, an unauthorized flight' in Mexican airspace. The planes that have been conducting flights seem to aim to collect information on Mexican drug cartels, which were recently designated as terrorists. Since January 20, the presence of U.S. planes has intensified due to Donald Trump's demand to combat organized crime trafficking fentanyl to his country.

President Sheinbaum mentioned that while the flights are not new, a great deal of intelligence information has been shared that has allowed for arrests. She asserted that the operation and planning of these flights belong to each country, being part of joint working protocols. General Ricardo Trevilla from Sedena stated that national sovereignty has not been violated and that objectives were established in October to collaborate more effectively with the United States on security matters.

Regarding CIA drones that have flown over Mexican territory, Sheinbaum mentioned that this is a cooperation and coordination effort between both countries. The Morena majority in the Chamber of Deputies requested a report from the federal government regarding U.S. aircraft and drone flights in Mexican territory, expressing their concern over the violation of national sovereignty.

In summary, the issue of U.S. planes and drones flying over Mexican territory has generated various reactions and requests for reports from authorities and political parties, who seek to clarify the nature and scope of these operations.
