Alarming Rise in Child Murders in Sinaloa

The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Omar García Harfuch, revealed that since the beginning of the Sinaloa Cartel dispute in Sinaloa, nearly 30 children have been killed, totaling more than 800 homicides since September 9.

According to García Harfuch, the deaths of these minors were caused by criminal groups amid the rivalry between the Chapitos and the Mayos following the detention of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, co-founder of the cartel. He was handed over to the authorities by Joaquín Guzmán López, son of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán.

One of the most prominent cases was that of Gael and Alexander, aged 9 and 12 respectively, who were killed along with their father in January, triggering protests and demands for the resignation of the governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya.

Since Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency on October 1, the government has implemented the presence of the National Guard in Sinaloa schools, which has prevented violent incidents. García Harfuch mentions that thanks to constant reinforcements and the dismantling of criminal structures, homicides in the state have been reduced.

In the context of operations, 899 people linked to the conflict have been arrested, which, according to the secretary, has weakened both factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.
