Actor Eduardo Verástegui has generated controversy after announcing his intentions to form a new political party in Mexico, Movimiento Viva México, approved by the National Electoral Institute (INE). Despite this attempt, in 2024 he failed to register as an independent candidate for the presidential elections.
During his participation in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the United States, Verástegui made a gesture that was compared to a Nazi salute, a gesture he denied having made with that intention. These actions have generated criticism from various public figures, including President Claudia Sheinbaum, who described Verástegui's political stances as "racist" and "classist".
In a recent conference, Sheinbaum expressed her doubts about the authenticity of the actor's statements, questioning whether they truly seek to draw attention or reflect his convictions. The president pointed out that Verástegui promotes a far-right, conservative, racist, and classist discourse, aspects that go against the historical consciousness of the Mexican people, characterized by a rejection of hate speech.
The gesture that triggered the controversy consisted of placing the hand on the heart before extending it forward, interpreted by many as an attempt to emulate the Nazi salute. Despite Verástegui's denials, the criticisms have intensified due to his links with figures of the American far-right, such as former President Donald Trump.
Despite the controversies generated, Eduardo Verástegui's figure remains in the public opinion, sparking debates and questions about his political positions and the acceptance of his speeches in Mexico.
