Security Meeting Between Mexico and the U.S.

The Mexican Security Cabinet along with the Attorney General of the Republic will travel to Washington to meet with their American counterparts. The delegation is led by Chancellor Juan Ramón de la Fuente and includes Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch, Attorney General of the Republic Alejandro Gertz Manero, as well as the Secretaries of Defense, General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, and the Navy, Raymundo Morales Ángeles.

The agenda of the meeting will focus on the fight against drug trafficking, with special emphasis on reducing the trafficking of drugs to the United States, particularly synthetic drugs like fentanyl. In the morning conference at the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned that an agreement on security coordination will be sought with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

According to Jesús Esquivel, correspondent, the U.S. government seeks to reduce the flow of undocumented immigrants and strengthen intelligence information sharing, especially to detect the movement of drug traffickers in Mexican territory. This meeting is expected to address the demands raised by Trump to apply a 25% tariff starting March 4, related to combating drug trafficking and reducing the migratory flow.

Esquivel also mentions the possibility that the Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, will raise the issue of the extradition of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada García with the U.S. Department of Justice, even though that process depends on Judge Brian Cogan in Brooklyn, New York. Regarding Zambada, it is mentioned that both prosecutors and his defense attorney are negotiating an agreement that could lead him to become a protected witness. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for April 22.
