President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico expressed her determination to reach an agreement within the framework of the country's sovereignty and constitution, rejecting any form of foreign interference in internal affairs to combat organized crime. She announced that a team led by Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of the Sedena, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, Secretary of the Navy, José Rafael Ojeda Durán, the Attorney General of the Republic, Alejandro Gertz Manero, and the Chancellor, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, will be heading to the United States.
The president confirmed that this trip comes just days before the deadline for a postponement of U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports. She emphasized the importance of reaching agreements in key areas such as the fight against organized crime, migration, and tariffs, in order to lay the groundwork for a possible meeting with President Donald Trump.
According to the disseminated agenda, the Mexican team is scheduled to have a meeting with Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico fights organized crime within the existing legal framework and seeks to reduce tensions with the United States, avoiding the imposition of tariffs that could negatively impact the Mexican economy.
The security strategy implemented on the northern border, with the deployment of the National Guard and the security work coordinated by Omar García Harfuch, is part of Mexico's efforts to combat crime. Sheinbaum called for not politicizing the process and intensifying efforts to achieve a mutually beneficial agreement for both nations.
