The reform to prohibit nepotism in public positions, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, is set to take effect in 2027, according to Ricardo Monreal, leader of the Morena deputies. Monreal expressed his support for this reform during a discussion in San Lázaro, indicating that the president was clear in stating that the law should apply to the midterm elections. He emphasized that if parties nominate relatives, things will not go well for them, and he agrees with that stance. Monreal explained that the new definition of nepotism focuses on popular elected positions that cannot be occupied by relatives, referring to his brothers, the governor of Zacatecas, and Senator Saúl, who were elected popularly.
The deputy stated that he would have no problem if the reform comes into effect in 2027 and hoped that the Constitutional Points Commission would reflect on it upon receiving the reform bill. The original initiative proposed by Sheinbaum established that no family member can succeed another in a popular elected position immediately starting in 2027. However, the Green Party in the Senate made a reservation that delayed the enforcement of the law, due to the intention of Senator Ruth González, wife of Ricardo Gallardo, governor of San Luis Potosí, to run for that position in 2027.
Ricardo Monreal commented on the change in the law, stressing that the discussions will be interesting when the corresponding committees meet. Jokingly, he mentioned that his family has several members in political positions: "Yes, there are many of us, I apologize to everyone, but that was decided by my dad and my mom. We are 14!". Monreal clarified that in his opinion, in the case of his family, there is no nepotism, as it occurs when a superior benefits a relative.
