Sergio Arturo Ramírez, partner of the defense attorney of Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, responded to the criticisms from the PAN and the Morena deputy, Sergio Mayer, who called him a 'narco-lawyer'. In an interview, Ramírez explained that Mayer hired him as a lawyer months ago and admitted that they are friends, despite accusations of being linked to organized crime.
Mayer, for his part, clarified that in 2021 he hired Ramírez as a technical liaison and said he was unaware of his supposed connection to criminal activities. In response to the criticisms, Ramírez denied the accusations and claimed that he learned about the defense of Zambada García from Juan Pablo Penilla thanks to a note by Anabel Hernández.
In another statement, Ramírez emphasized that he would never deny his friends and admitted to having business dealings with the current defenders of 'El Mayo' Zambada, Juan Manuel and Juan Pablo Penilla. Although he specified that he is not part of Zambada's defense team, he acknowledged his long-standing friendship with the lawyers.
The lawyer lamented that his friends are caught up in a scandal orchestrated by the PAN and expressed that the generated accusations could affect his family members. Furthermore, he denied any close relationship with President Claudia Sheinbaum, stating that their communication has been minimal.
In the midst of the controversy, Ramírez highlighted his extensive career as a defense attorney for various clients, including entrepreneurs, victims, and children, and emphasized that the accusations against him have no basis.
