89 Civil Organizations Aim to Form New Political Parties

In Mexico, 89 civil organizations are seeking to form as new political parties with the goal of challenging the dominance of Morena, the party founded by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador in October 2011. Among these groups looking to become parties and compete in the midterm elections of 2027 are 'Somos México' led by former PRD member Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo; 'Movimiento Viva México' from actor Eduardo Verástegui, who sympathizes with the far-right; the defunct PRD that seeks to resurge under the leadership of Jesús Zambrano with the name 'Ciudadanos Unidos'; and the former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas, who will form her own political party called 'Por la Familia y la Seguridad.'

One of the requirements to form a new political party in Mexico is to carry out 20 assemblies in the states of the country or conduct 200 meetings in 200 electoral districts, with the participation of at least 3,000 affiliated individuals. The National Electoral Institute will be responsible for verifying the authenticity of the affiliations and ensuring that guild organizations do not participate in the assemblies.

'Movimiento Viva México' and 'Somos México' have begun the affiliation process, allowing supporters to join through online forms and affiliation days respectively. For example, 'Somos México' led by Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo managed to affiliate 10,000 new members during a weekend of affiliation initiatives.

Political parties are considered organizations of public interest in Mexico, aimed at promoting citizen participation and preserving democracy. Political parties share goals, interests, and a vision of the nation, presenting candidates for public office in order to contribute to the economic and social development of the country.
