Morena Modifies Political Reform in the Senate

Morena in the Senate of the Republic accepted the proposal from Senator Manuel Velasco to postpone the entry into force of the reform that prohibits nepotism and re-election in popular elected positions until 2030 instead of 2027, in a gesture towards the Green Party. Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña acknowledged that the Green's interest in the governorship of San Luis Potosí influenced this modification of the reform.

"Thanks to this reform, which I personally believe should have been implemented in 2027, we will put an end to real caciquism, the kind that existed in the past and left our state in ruins, marginalization, economic backwardness, and poverty," stated González Silva after the controversy erupted.

In the morning press conference on Wednesday, Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the negotiation to delay the entry into force of the anti-nepotism law until 2030 was in the interest of the electoral coalition between Morena, the Green Party, and the Labor Party, although she did not want to acknowledge the pressure from the Green Party. Concern arose in San Luis Potosí, where Gallardo is on alert due to the impossibility of his wife competing for the governorship in 2027.

The reform establishes that positions in federal, state, and municipal administration cannot be occupied immediately if there is a marriage, cohabitation, relationship by blood or civil ties in a straight line without limitation of degree and in collateral line up to the fourth degree.

The president of the Senate Board of Directors explained that the Green's interest in San Luis Potosí was crucial in the negotiations, revealing that there were divided positions in the party regarding the implementation of the nepotism prohibition in 2027. Gallardo's proposal for 2027 focuses on his wife, as the majority is needed to amend the Constitution. The initiative aims to prevent "electoral nepotism."
