Morena Will Not Nominate Relatives in Local Elections

The national president of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde Luján, announced that her party will not nominate relatives of officials in the local elections this year in Durango and Veracruz. Additionally, she will present a statutory incorporation proposal to the National Congress of Morena to extend this measure until the electoral process of 2027.

In line with the principles of impartiality and transparency in internal processes, Alcalde Luján stated: "In congruence with the proposal of President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding nepotism and non-reelection, our Party-Movement will NOT PRESENT proposals from relatives in the local elections this year in Durango and Veracruz."

The constitutional reform to prohibit consecutive reelection and nepotism in public offices was approved by the Senate this Tuesday. However, the entry into force of these measures was postponed to 2030, instead of 2027 as initially proposed. This was decided after the promotion of Adán Augusto López of Morena and Manuel Velasco of the Green Party.

The reform received unanimous approval in its general approval with 127 votes in favor, but the modification to delay its implementation received 97 votes in favor and 26 against, showing dissatisfaction among the benches. The opposition has criticized this change, considering it aims to favor ruling politicians with aspirations in the local elections of 2027.
