Javier Aguirre Defends Gulf of Mexico Name

The technical director of the Mexican National Team, Javier Aguirre, has sent a message to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the name change of the Gulf of Mexico. Trump recently named it the Gulf of America for the maritime area encompassing the coasts of Mexico, Cuba, and the southern beaches of the United States. Although some geolocation applications have modified the name of the gulf, for Aguirre it will always be called the Gulf of Mexico.

In a press conference about the Mexican National Team's participation in the Nations League, Aguirre was asked for his opinion on Trump’s policies. In response, the 'Vasco' mentioned: "I wouldn’t want to enter a territory that does not belong to me and is not the reason for this meeting, but I can say that since I was a player, I remember when we came to Los Angeles, and they always welcomed us with support, and that’s why my message is one of gratitude."

Aguirre, who identifies with migrants as the son of immigrants, expressed his support for those seeking a better life in another country. He stated that the correct name is the Gulf of Mexico and that he identifies closely with those looking for opportunities away from their place of origin.

Regarding the upcoming commitment of the Mexican National Team in the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League, the team will face Canada in the semifinals on Thursday, March 20 at 20:30 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. On the same day, the United States and Panama will play the other semifinal at 18:00. The tournament final and the third-place match are scheduled for Sunday, March 23, with times yet to be determined.
