The extradition of nearly 30 criminal leaders wanted by U.S. justice took place at a particular moment. This coincided with the bilateral tensions caused by the tariffs pushed by Donald Trump, while Omar García Harfuch, in charge of the fight against insecurity in Mexico, is traveling in Washington.
The Mexican government confirmed the extradition of 29 individuals accused of drug-related crimes to the United States. It is known that among those extradited are Miguel Treviño Morales and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales, known as Z-40 and Z-42, respectively, who are founders of the Los Zetas cartel.
This action presents an important message from Mexico to the United States, in response to the demand for results in the fight against organized crime and especially in the trafficking of fentanyl. The goal is to ease bilateral tensions and demonstrate progress in the demands of the U.S. government.
In a joint statement, the Secretariat of Security and the Attorney General's Office confirmed the extradition, highlighting that it was carried out under institutional protocols and bilateral cooperation. It mentions that among the extradited are important leaders of organized crime, such as Rafael Caro Quintero, founder of the Guadalajara and Caborca cartels.
The extraditions seek to address the concerns generated by Donald Trump's threats and strengthen the security strategy in Mexico. One of the emblematic cases is that of Caro Quintero, accused of participating in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. This measure aims to send a strong message from the National Palace to the White House.
