Internal Conflicts in Morena over Nepotism in Zacatecas

Senator Saúl Monreal seeks to succeed his brother in Zacatecas, but tensions in Morena are rising following the proposal to veto family candidacies, disrupting the political landscape.

Internal Conflicts in Morena over Nepotism in Zacatecas

Senator Saúl Monreal announced that he will seek to succeed his brother, David Monreal, as governor of Zacatecas. In light of this news, the president of Morena, Luisa María Alcalde, reiterated her commitment to veto such candidacies in the party, which could affect the Monreal family's plans in the region.

The modifications to the bill to prohibit nepotism, made by the Senate, generated tensions within the 4T. Claudia Sheinbaum's original proposal was to implement the prohibition starting in 2027, but the Senate changed it to 2030, which was criticized by Alcalde and other members of Morena.

Amid these disputes, the historic rivalry between the Puros of Morena and the Monreal family in Zacatecas stands out. This situation is also present in Guerrero, where Félix Salgado seeks to continue the work of his daughter, Evelyn Salgado.

Alcalde's statements and the Senate's stance on nepotism generated discontent in sectors of Morena, who question both the changes made and Sheinbaum's disapproval of family candidacies.

Regarding the appointment of positions in the party, Ricardo Monreal managed to appoint an ally as a delegate to the INE after defeating opposing groups in the vote. These decisions have exacerbated internal tensions in Morena.

In this context, Alcalde announced that she will present a proposal at the National Congress of Morena to prohibit family candidacies in the 2027 elections, which would affect Saúl Monreal's and Félix Salgado's aspirations. For his part, Saúl Monreal has expressed his intention to run as a candidate for governor of Zacatecas, leaving the decision in the hands of the people.

At a Morena conference, Claudia Sheinbaum supported Alcalde's proposal, emphasizing that this initiative is already part of the party's statutes.
