The Chamber of Deputies has received an initiative proposing to reform the Constitution to strengthen national sovereignty and establish mandatory preventive detention in cases of terrorism. The proposal was approved in the Senate and has been highlighted by the president of the Coordination Board, Ricardo Monreal, as an important step to protect the nation from foreign interventions.
The initiative seeks to add paragraphs to Article 40 of the Constitution to make it clear that Mexico will not tolerate actions that threaten its independence, nor interventions without the authorization of the Mexican State. Additionally, it aims to amend Article 19 of the Constitution to allow the Attorney General to request preventive detention in terrorism cases.
In Ricardo Monreal's words, "This initiative is fundamental to safeguard Mexico's sovereignty and prevent external intrusions in matters that exclusively concern the country. It is an energetic step that demonstrates our determination to protect national integrity."
Claudia Sheinbaum, president, sent the initiative to the Congress of the Union with the aim of strengthening Mexico's stance against the illegal entry of arms from the United States and to accuse as accomplices those who participate in such illicit activities.
