This Friday, February 28, 2025, major national newspapers highlight news about the delivery of 29 drug lords by Mexico to the United States.
According to reports from the newspapers, among those transferred are leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, Los Zetas, CJNG, and the Beltrán Leyva cartel. The action was carried out swiftly because judges were about to release most of the drug lords.
In an unprecedented measure, Mexico handed over 29 incarcerated drug lords to the United States, including Caro Quintero, Zetas, Chapitos, Vicente Carrillo, Antonio Oseguera, El Güerito, and others. Washington is reportedly considering imposing the death penalty or life imprisonment for six of the extradited drug lords.
This delivery, requested by the U.S. Department of Justice, was carried out under a framework different from extradition for "national security" reasons.
In other news, in anticipation of the possible imposition of tariffs, Mexican exports recorded a 10.6% annual increase in January, mainly in non-petroleum sales to the United States.
Lastly, it is reported that President Trump revoked the extension of the deadline for imposing tariffs, setting March 4 as the new cutoff date. Mexico and the United States held a high-level security meeting regarding this issue.
