The Government of Mexico has called for a press conference on Friday at noon, where the security cabinet will address the surprising transfer of 29 drug lords to the United States, according to authorities. This transfer of drug traffickers occurred just days before the March 4 deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for the imposition of a 25% tariff on Mexican products. Trump has threatened Mexico with these measures if it does not intensify its efforts in the fight against drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and irregular migration.
President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the press conference will take place at 11:00 local time, without providing further details. She also mentioned that details of a possible contact with Trump will be defined during the day before the deadline for the imposition of tariffs, which could provoke a regional trade war, given that Canada has also been threatened with similar measures.
On Thursday, Mexico transferred to the United States a historical leader of the Guadalajara Cartel, Rafael Caro Quintero, accused of the murder of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a former DEA agent, 40 years ago. This transfer was made along with 28 other alleged cartel members, marking the largest handover of this type in recent history.
