Sheinbaum Discusses Drug Trafficking Deadline

President Claudia Sheinbaum recalled this Friday that there are still "three days left" until the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump to reduce drug trafficking to that country and avoid a 25% tariff on Mexican products, expressing hope in reaching an agreement.

"On this matter, well, there are still three days left," the leader pointed out during her morning press conference from the National Palace. The governor also stated that this Friday the terms of the call she will have with her American counterpart on the issue will be defined, following the request made on Thursday for the conversation.

"Today the characteristics will be defined, when it will be, etc.," she affirmed, without providing further details. Sheinbaum's remarks come a day after it was reported that 29 drug traffickers, including Rafael Caro Quintero, were extradited to the United States in a "unprecedented" operation and after a high-level Mexican delegation meeting in Washington, led by its Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio.

The Mexican government has intensified diplomatic efforts in recent days with its U.S. counterpart to halt the 25% tariffs on Mexican products proposed by President Donald Trump for March 4.

Trump stated this Thursday from the Oval Office that he is not seeing progress in the fight against drugs by Mexico and Canada that would allow him to consider not imposing the 25% tariffs against both North American neighbors next week. The Mexican leader has emphasized the importance of maintaining "a cool head" and has expressed confidence that both governments will reach an agreement to avoid the tariffs.

According to the Mexican government, due to the deployment of Mexican military personnel at the U.S. border, agreed upon weeks ago with Trump to postpone the tariffs, significant arrests have been made and more than 11,000 kilograms of drugs have been seized.
