The Senate of Mexico decided to postpone the implementation of the reform proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum to combat nepotism in the country until the year 2030. This last-minute modification was made under pressure from the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM).
The reform, which includes the prohibition of the reelection of legislators and mayors, will also come into effect in 2030. Despite the proposal being approved in general unanimously, it received harsh criticism from the opposition in the Senate.
The main objective of this reform is to strengthen transparency and fairness in electoral processes, eliminating favoritism and influence peddling, and ensuring that public positions are filled based on merits and capabilities, not family connections.
The deputy coordinator of the Morena parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, Gabriela Jiménez Godoy, has expressed her confidence in reversing the modification made in the Senate and that the reform will come into effect in 2027, as originally proposed by President Sheinbaum.
The next step will be to discuss the draft in the Political-Electoral Reform and Constitutional Points Committees, before being debated and voted on in the Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies. Jiménez Godoy emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy through the constant renewal of public positions, providing opportunities for new leadership that represents the will of the Mexicans.
