The Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) has simplified the requirements for passport-related procedures. This is because now, through technological tools, various documents such as civil registry certificates can be consulted and generated, including birth, marriage, death, and adoption certificates.
In February, the "Agreement establishing simplification actions for procedures carried out before the Secretariat of Foreign Relations" came into effect. This measure aims to improve regulation in the issuance of passports, identity and travel documents, as well as the legalization of public documents with effects abroad.
The SRE emphasized: "The regulatory improvement policy to simplify and modernize procedures and services carried out by the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, with the support of the Digital Transformation Agency, represents the beginning of a new phase in passport issuance."
One of the advantages for passport applicants is that they will no longer have to submit physical documents; they will only need to go to a Passport Office when they cannot generate them through the available technological tool.
It was detailed that the simplification reduces the requirements from six to three for adults applying for a passport for the first time, and from four to two for renewal in case of loss or theft. For minors in the same type of procedure, the requirements are reduced from seven to five.
Additionally, during the period from February 20 to 28, 101,996 passports were issued in the 45 corresponding offices, applying the simplification for first-time procedures by not requiring a birth certificate and for those who need to replace their passport due to theft or loss.
The SRE reminded interested parties that need to make an appointment must do so through official channels, which include the website www.citas.sre.gob.mx, the Contact Center, and WhatsApp: 55 89 32 48 27, and pay at authorized bank windows, not at convenience stores or personal accounts. The appointment is completely free.
