Proposal to Change Country Name to Mexico

Deputy Kenia López Rabadán, from the National Action Party (PAN), has presented an initiative to reform various articles of the Political Constitution of Mexico with the aim of changing the official name of the country from the United Mexican States to simply Mexico, in order to recognize national roots and identity.

In the document submitted to the Commission on Constitutional Points, it is emphasized that the proposal does not seek to modify the system of government or abandon federalism, as Article 40 of the Constitution establishes that the country is a representative, democratic, secular, and federal Republic, composed of free and sovereign states, in addition to Mexico City, all united in a federation.

The legislator stressed that international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States (OAS) recognize the country by the name Mexico. However, in other constitutions, such as that of 1857, the name Mexican Republic was used.

The initiative proposes to modify several articles of the Constitution to officialize the designation Mexico. It has the support of members of the PAN parliamentary group and opens a debate on national identity and the relevance of updating the country's name, a discussion that has been present throughout history.

National institutions such as the Bank of Mexico, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the Mexican Mint officially use this designation. The deputy recalled that the Constitution of Apatzingán of 1814 referred to the country as Mexican America, while the Constitution of 1824 called it the United Mexican States, terminology that has been taken up in the current Magna Carta of 1917.
