The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the good coordination with both her cabinet and with business leaders and citizens, amid the possibility that President Donald Trump may impose new tariffs on Mexican products. In this situation, Sheinbaum assured that her administration has contingency plans prepared for any scenario that may arise.
In a morning conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that 17 of the 29 drug lords extradited to the United States were captured during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which demonstrates action against organized crime and refutes criticism of the 'Hugs, Not Bullets' policy implemented in the past.
The president stressed effective cooperation with the United States in matters of security, highlighting the detention of drug lords as part of an ongoing strategy to combat drug trafficking. Sheinbaum also emphasized the importance of cooperation in security and trade with the United States, mentioning bilateral meetings at the State Department where issues such as drug and arms trafficking were discussed, as well as campaigns to prevent the consumption of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs.
Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico is prepared with several contingency plans in light of the possible imposition of tariffs, being aware that the situation depends on the U.S. government. The president mentioned the importance of staying calm and having patience to face any scenario that may arise.
