The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, called for calm and patience amid the pressure from the United States to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican exports. She highlighted that these arrests were made during the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, countering criticisms of the national security strategy.
Sheinbaum stated that Mexico has a solid strategy to face any situation with the United States, emphasizing the country's cohesion in the face of this challenge. She expressed that the meetings in the United States were productive and that there is constant communication between the various governmental areas related to security and trade.
Regarding the possible imposition of tariffs, the president said that Mexico has prepared several contingency plans and will wait to see how the events unfold. Donald Trump's threat to tax Mexican products arises in response to what he considers lax policies regarding drug trafficking and irregular migration.
Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's recent actions against drug trafficking, including arrests and extraditions of drug cartel leaders. Although the final decision regarding tariffs rests with the United States, Mexico is prepared to take measures in response while negotiations between both countries continue.
In a press conference, the president emphasized the importance of maintaining serenity amid this external pressure. She concluded by reiterating that the policy of 'hugs, not bullets' does not imply impunity, defending the security measures implemented in recent years in Mexico.
