President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Morena Party propose to incorporate a measure against nepotism that will come into effect in 2027, seeking to ensure transparent elections and avoid bad practices.

Proposal Against Nepotism in Mexico for 2027

President Claudia Sheinbaum sent a reform against nepotism that has generated controversy. Sheinbaum's original proposal aims to come into effect in 2027, but the Senate modified the law to delay its implementation until 2030, following negotiations with the Green Party of Mexico.

In response, Morena's vice-coordinator, Gabriela Jiménez, stated that they are looking to reverse these changes to maintain the original measure. Jiménez emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency in electoral processes and eliminating bad practices, as part of the commitment to strengthen democracy and continuously renew public positions to allow the participation of new leadership.

PAN senator Ricardo Anaya criticized the modification of Sheinbaum's proposal and considered that distancing voters is a risk for Morena. On the other hand, the party's president, Luisa María Alcalde, announced that in line with Sheinbaum's proposal, there will be no family candidates in the local elections of Durango and Veracruz this year.

Sheinbaum has reiterated the importance of awaiting the final decision of the Chamber of Deputies regarding the reform and has emphasized that the proposal arises from dialogue with the citizenry. The president has highlighted that personal ambition should not prevail over the principles of transformation and that laws and the Constitution must be above individual or party interests.
