The support of 6,200 pesos for older adults will be suspended for two months, as announced by Ariadna Montiel, Secretary of Welfare, during the presentation of the payment calendar for the Pension of Welfare. The suspension does not mean the elimination of the social program, but it responds to the electoral ban due to the local elections that will take place in Durango and Veracruz in June 2025.
In these two states, those receiving the Pension of Welfare will receive a double payment, reaching a total of 12,400 pesos. Durango will elect 39 municipalities, 39 syndicates, and 326 councilorships, while in Veracruz the presidencies and syndicates of its 212 municipalities will be decided, as well as 630 councilorships.
It is anticipated that in these elections, the Morena party will implement measures to prevent nepotism and that relatives of individuals in public positions will not run as candidates.
The payment calendar presented by Secretary Montiel details that deposits will be made on different dates depending on the initial of the beneficiary's last name. The payment suspension will extend over the weekends and Monday, March 17, due to the holiday celebrating the birth of President Benito Juárez.
The reactivation of the Pension of Welfare payments in Durango and Veracruz will occur until July 2025, when older adults in those states will receive their support again. So far, the federal government has not announced the suspension of the program in the rest of the 30 states of Mexico due to the election of ministers and judges scheduled for June 1.
