Sheinbaum Faces Political Setback on Nepotism Law

In a recent political showdown, President Claudia Sheinbaum's attempts to reduce nepotism faced obstacles as the Senate moved forward with modified reforms. The proposals will not take effect until 2030, despite her calls for earlier action. Amid a backdrop of controversy, the future of anti-nepotism measures hangs in the balance.

Ramírez Cuéllar unsuccessfully attempted to modify the bill to prohibit nepotism and to take effect in 2027 instead of 2030. Despite his efforts, coordinator Ricardo Monreal managed to impose his stance.

President Claudia Sheinbaum once again rejected the candidacies of relatives, while Félix Salgado withdrew from the race in Guerrero to wait until 2033. The lower house will discuss the initiative with the modifications made by the Senate, postponing the prohibition of candidacies of relatives until 2030.

During a press conference, Sheinbaum criticized Salgado and anticipated that she would take measures to prevent official figures from succeeding their relatives in public positions. Despite Ramírez Cuéllar's attempts, the desired modifications were not achieved.

It is expected that the lower house will approve the reform with the Senate's modifications, which would be largely supported. In this context, Sheinbaum may seek to internally prohibit the candidacies of relatives in Morena through a new initiative presented by Luisa María Alcalde.
