The division within Morena in Nuevo León has become increasingly evident during the recent visits of the president Claudia Sheinbaum, who has avoided private meetings with local actors to not favor potential candidates and to prevent increasing tension in the party.
Three weeks ago, the leadership of Morena in Nuevo León, led by Anabel Alcocer, organized a meeting that only included mayors and deputies aligned with the Escobedo Group. After an indecisive period as state leader, Alcocer Cruz decided to align herself with the leadership headed by Abel Guerra and Clara Luz Flores.
Senator Waldo Fernández was also organizing meetings to plan the internal election without the participation of representatives from the rival group. This was due to messages sent from Escobedo directed at Luisa María Alcalde, who has a close relative of Abel Guerra, the leader of that group, with sensitive information that could provoke an irreversible break.
The secretary of organization of Morena, Andrés López Beltrán, urged his counterpart in Nuevo León, René González Hernández, to maintain a balance between the warring groups within the party. The main challenge for González Hernández is to avoid fueling the rivalry between the Escobedo group and senators Fernández and Judith Díaz.
Despite Senator Waldo Fernández being the favorite in the polls for the upcoming elections, his candidacy for 2027 is rejected by the mayors of Escobedo, García, and Santa Catarina. In this context, González Hernández is expected to remain neutral and not take sides with any particular profile or group.
